I am compiling charts that depict each state's voting history in presidential elections going back to the 19th century. The bars show the size of the winning margin in each election (blue bars on the left for Democrats who won the state, red bars on the right for Republicans who won the state).
I will be posting the states in reverse order of their size. You can click the charts to make them bigger. The states posted so far are here. The best source for election data is The Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections. And if you like election facts, check out my post "Everywhere an outlier: What each state does best in presidential politics."
First up: Wyoming, which first voted in 1892.
Wyoming has not voted for a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The record Republican margin was for the Bush/Cheney ticket in 2004. The total number of votes cast first exceeded 100,000 in 1936, when Franklin Roosevelt achieved a record margin for a Democrat here. The total topped 200,000 in 1996, when Bob Dole carried the state.
