As Portland goes, so goes Portland.
OREGON's voting history is similar to that of Northern New England (where the other Portland lives). It leaned Republican until breaking heavily for Democrat Johnson over Goldwater in 1964, then gave the GOP a few more chances. It was Dukakis (a New Englander) that cemented Oregon as part of the Democratic base. The Democrats have won the state in the past six elections, and Obama easily broke Johnson's record for the biggest victory margin in Oregon history (298,816 votes). Still, Democrats need to win a few more times to break the 10-election winning streak (with tiny margins by today's standards) established by the GOP from 1872 through 1908.
