Arizona is the Audrey II of American states, flourishing with new Republicans but threatening to become too big to control.
ARIZONA cemented its Republican reputation in 1984, when it hit 1 million votes (more than doubling its 1968 total) and went almost 2-1 for Reagan. His 66.4% is still a Republican record here, as is his margin of 347,562. Since then the state has continued to grow, hitting 2 million votes in 2004, but the Republican advantage has receded somewhat. McCain won in 2004 with 53.4% and a margin of 195,504. Romney should take Arizona fairly easily in 2012, but a growing Hispanic population may make the state more competitive in years to come.
