Feel the McCain-mentum!
TENNESSEE, in contrast to Southern states like Alabama and Mississippi, turned in a bigger Republican margin in 2008 than in 2004, largely because its relatively small black population failed to give much of a boost to Obama. McCain won by 391,741 votes, the largest margin in state history outside of Nixon's 1972 win (455,854). The state's Republican tilt became pronounced in 1960, when turnout topped 1 million for the first time. Since then, only Southerners (Johnson, Carter, Clinton) have come anywhere close to carrying Tennessee, and even Gore's Volunteer State roots failed to get him a win here in 2000. Turnout surpassed 2 million that year, and continued growth seems to be only solidifying the GOP advantage.
