Dynastic elements will always play a role in politics simply because of the name recognition factor. See the current boomlet of interest in Joe Kennedy, who certainly would also benefit from some of the goodwill surrounding his uncle's funeral and the Kennedy legacy in general. However, considering Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg's debacle in New York and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's 2002 loss in Maryland, the era when a Kennedy has an automatic lock on a seat (even in Massachusetts) is clearly coming to a close.
